SENIOR PRIMARY - Gr 4 - Gr 7

Curriculum

The Senior Primary Phase aims to prepare children for a smooth transition to High School. In the Senior phase the academic requirements become more demanding and structured. Textbooks, projects and exams are all new challenges. This can be a daunting time for both children and parents. We are well aware of the challenges in this phase and our experienced teachers are available to both parents and students to help smooth this transition.

Hartford College has high academic standards. We still consider 50% to be a minimum exam pass rate. Great emphasis is placed on the teaching of mathematics and the sciences, building a solid foundation for further studies.

Computer instruction is part of the curriculum from grade 4 - 7. Each classroom has a projector so that lessons can be enriched with suitable video and visual media.

In this phase children become ‘teens’. Their bodies are maturing and they are becoming more independent and inquiring. Within our safe school environment, we hope to guide their social and emotional development, so that they learn how to cultivate friendships that may last lifetime, while making sound decisions that are based on strong universal morals and values.

Religious Education

Hartford College does not teach religious studies. In the diverse and multicultural society that we live in, we believe that it is the choice and responsibility of parents to guide their child’s spiritual development. We do however teach universally accepted morals and values programme, which we hope will help guide children’s decisions and choices.

Eco-Schools

Hartford College is a member of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA). We have been awarded three green flags for our environmental teaching. The school has been awarded, International Green Flag status, for sustained environmental teaching and action.

As the children get older they are able to consider issues that challenge the sustainability of our natural environment, such as plastic and its impact in our oceans and water-ways, climate change and the impact of melting polar caps.

Possibility of a Hartford College High School

Although Hartford College has no immediate plans to build a high school, it remains an opportunity for the future.

In the interim, we have built up co-operative relationships with other like-minded schools in the area, in order to ensure that there is a smooth transition from our Senior Primary school to High school.
