The Hartford College pre-school was specifically designed and built to suit the needs of our young children. It is a small, safe environment that has an intimate ‘home from home’ feel.

We have a ‘blended’ approach to our Pre-school education. Adopting the best aspects of the Montessori method, where children learn by working with age appropriate equipment which stimulates their imaginations and problem solving abilities. The incorporation of the CAPS curriculum gives the day structure, guiding the children through themes and preparing them for the transition to Primary school.

Work in the classroom, is balances with a lot of physical activity. Lunch breaks are extended, so that children enjoy free-time playing and socialising with their peers. Gross and fine motor skills are stimulated and developed by way of a weekly sports and a music and movement programme.

Literacy and numeracy skills are taught in age appropriate ways in order to ensure that our children are ready for the transition to Gr. 1 at our Primary school.

Religious Education

Hartford College does not teach religious studies. In the diverse and multicultural society that we live in, we believe that it is the choice and responsibility of parents to guide their child’s spiritual development. We do however teach universally accepted morals and values programme, which we hope will help guide children’s decisions and choices.

Nature Study

Being a member of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA), Hartford College endeavours to enrich our children’s education further, with a strong focus on nature and environmental issues

These topics vary from the life cycle of the frog, to learning to identify local garden birds. In this way, we draw the children’s attention to the natural environment around them.
