CHILDREN, REDUCE, RE-USE AND RECYCLE

At Hartford College, we like to believe in the ‘Star fish’ story, whereby each one of us can make a difference in some small way.  With this in mind, we started an inter class plastic collecting challenge. It started with our Grade 4 teacher (Ms. Harris) making an up-cycled trophy… This trophy is awarded to the class that brings the most plastic (by weight) over the course of the week.  The weeks inter class collection, is ‘keen and competitive’ – mountains of plastic floods in, in the hope of winning the weekly trophy.

At the end of a three week period the class that has won the trophy most often, gets to enjoy a ‘Casual Clothing Friday’ – this for our children, is the greatest reward!

As the school staff, we feel that there are many good lessons to be learnt from this exercise.

  • Children go home and mobilise their parents into collecting plastic
  • Children tell their parents about the impact of plastic in our environment.
  • We hope that parents then become sensitive to the amount of plastic, that is used in the home and make changes where they can.
  • All plastic collected ‘escapes’ being discarded into landfills, where it would lie for a generation.
  • And another important one for us, is that it generates an income for our ‘local plastic pickers’

Hartford College likes to regard the plastic pickers as ‘un-sung’ environmental heroes, as their living depend on collecting plastic.  The plastic is then often hauled several kilometers, to recycling depots where it is weighed, and they are paid accordingly.

Over the course of a school term our 170 children, collected a whopping 1 ton of plastic!!

Well done, children of Hartford College - not only have we protected our environment, but we have helped someone earn an honest living.

As the story of the ‘Star fish’ illustrates, a lot of small contributions can ‘make a ton’ of difference.
